LAGO VISTA FARMS has HOSTED over 200 INTERNATIONAL YOUTH AS volunteers SINCE 2012
I came to Canada to figure out what I want to do in life, to learn about discipline and to get to know other volunteers from all around the world. I stayed at the farm for five months in total ( I came back several times) and during the winter but there is always something to do and something new to learn.
The activities besides work are fun too. Swimming, making and learning about maple syrup or going to hockey games. Just two weeks after I arrived we went to a hockey game where I met my Canadian girlfriend for the first time and we are going out for 9 months now.
Thanks to Wesley and all the other helpers for making it such a great time for me !
as I return to Germany after an amazing year in Canada, I can say that I have grown and matured with guidance from many, including Wesley's friendship and trust he put in me as he made me the supervisor of the other volunteers. I encourage to support Wes to all who truly seek an adventure in Canada.
**IN REGARDS TO COVID-19** I was at LAGO VISTA FARMS as things got particularly serious when it came to this new Corona virus. I would like to make sure anyone thinking of going to this particular farm will find themselves in very safe and capable hands. Wesley was sure to be on top of any new information and safety regulations to combat the spread of this disease, and in doing so implemented an number of procedures to keep us and the animals safe. My time there was without concern of getting the disease myself due to the methods Wesley introduced, which was quite the achievement considering my problems with anxiety. With all the new rules woven in I felt they didn't impede on my experience of the farm life I was there to learn about, they most likely enhanced it, as I was the learning even more.
But if the work might be hard sometimes, there are good thing too ! The other volunteers are usually very cool, and we had a lot of fun together. Wes took us at a bar in Peterborough to shoot some pools and drink beer, or go to the beach at Cobourg, on Lake Ontario. You can also do some journey to Toronto, Niagara Falls or Montreal, and Wes will help you in your projects. And Wes' stories are fascinating, I personally learnt a lot by listening to his stories.
If you are looking for an experience in Canada in a farm, I'd recommend it !
P.S : it is obviously better if you understand English.
The farm is a great spot with views of a lake. You can not help but like all the dogs who just want to spend all day playing. Both Wes and JJ make you feel very welcomed at their place and are very interested in what you do and where you come from.
The work though was interesting too. I've never worked on a farm before, but that was of course no problem. Wesley showed me everything I need to know and the rest was explained by Brian and Jon, the two students who stay n the farm. It was very easy to understand. Wes let me work autonomously and let me drive his pick up and car.
After a few weeks Julie arrived, she was a girl from Belgium and had never been on a farm either. So then I started showing her how to do the process. The whole time we were learning and teaching, both at the same time.
I had a great time and the team worked perfectly together ! It's not only work if you do it with nice people.
Wesley also gave me a lot of free time to travel. He literally pushed me to do a trip to Washington for a week, to experience an American Thanksgiving there.
It really felt like home to me.
I have to admit that some days are better than others and work can really wear you out there, but it was an incredible experience and you don't only learn about animals, but about carpentry, fencing and much other stuff around farming too.
I wsih all the best to you and hope everything will keep on working out.
P.S : Best bacon I ever ate !
Wes has great confidence in his helpers and lets them do responsible job so that every day brings a new and exciting experience. I particularly liked the precise driving with the slid steer loader in the barn and the many excursions (hockey, pool, bar, canoeing).
Wes, I would like to thank you for the great support to get a job at the Blue Mountains Resort (I've got the job) and for the help with the implementation of a cover letter for an internship at an engineering office. Also the many tips for future travelling, purchase a car and much more deserve a great thank you.
Wes is a great host who is incredibly enthusiastic. His extensive experiences and stories will bring you to astonishment. LARGO VISTA FARMS quickly becomes a home that you reluctantly leave.
Thank you Wes, for the great time on the farm. I will be able to swarm for a long time.
Wes and JJ showed me several beautiful places to relax and enjoy, like spot on a nearby river to swim or the beach in Cobourg.
The food was great as well, so many BBQ's !
We had several other volunteers at the same time so I enjoyed working as a team. I enjoyed listening to Wes's stories about his travels. Wesley helped me to organize my trips through the US and gave me great tips where I should consider visiting.
Thanks for the opportunity
The work is not too difficult and it was really interesting to learn about how to look after different animals and work on different projects on the house.
I really recommend this place for anyone. Great place, great people.
Thanks Wesley.
Wes and JJ are great hosts and really make you feel comfortable. Wes has lots of interesting stories and is quite an accomplished cook that being said their hospitality is top class and you are really treated as family. They will go out of their way to help you explore more of Canada.
So to anyone coming to visit Ontario or just passing through stop in here you will not regret it.
Thanks for everything with affection.
He is a good cook, although he always says that it's simple what he is cooking. I fed the animals in the morning and in the evening. We were busy with loading and hawling way as well as fencing. It's a farm were you get dirty hands and sometimes back pain but you can learn a lot animals and about life as a whole.
I highly recommend volunteering at the farm !
I will never forget this experience.
Thanks for all, you allowed me to learn about myself and about Canadian culture. And also about English language 🙂 I hope to see you a day in France.
The work mainly involved the daily feeding and watering of the animals, but I helped with some construction projects and other projects necessary for the care of the animals or the maintenance of their housing. After only a week, I had some new muscles ! It can be tough, but it's rewarding to know your hard work not only goes toward keeping the animals happy and healthy, it also ultimately goes toward helping people in need.
I met some amazing people there from many places around the world, enjoyed spending time off with them talking, joking, eating together, and relaxing with a movie, show or game cards.
I also got to know the host, Wes, well. He is a very unique individual who has lived an interesting life. He inspired me, as I saw how dedicated he is to his farm and its contribution to a worthy cause despite the challenges it brings. He has a lot of amazing stories to share and advice to give. He offered me personally some wise guidance I will use in my own life. He is kind and generous and makes sure the volunteers are well fed and have what they need to live very comfortably in the volunteers living area.
If you want an experience that will offer you a lot to learn, which will challenge you and help you grow, and to be in a beautiful location around interesting people, I would definitely recommend LAGO VISTA FARMS.
About the work ? I would say physical, diversified and never boring. I fed animals twice a day and then carried out small project as fencing, weeding, giving medication to sheep !!)
There are also five friendly dogs (Shayana, Mia, Peanut, Sassy, Fluffy ....puppies I miss you !! I would have liked to stay more time but I had to go back to Montreal.
I recommend you to stop at the farm if you are in Ontario.
Wes and JJ thanks for your hospitality, I wish you the best. Take care.
Thanks for the good time !
The drop and pick up at the bus station worked well and was really nice opportunity to get around. I went to Toronto and did a trip to Algonquin Provincial Park.
If you like to talk about politics, economy, military, society, just everything you can imagine ...Wes is simply the best opponent you can get. You can learn so much about the Canadian history and Canadian habits while improving your English.
Would love to stay there again.
It's a great place to learn, you will work every day at the farm feeding the animals ( cute piglets, calves, sheep, chicken ...) and you can also organize a weekend somewhere like in Toronto for example. The hosts are really interesting and smart, you will enjoy their company for sure ! You will get good food, space for you and Wes will tell you many stories 🙂 Thank you again for this experience ! Take care.
Wes was an excellent host, since the first day he made us feel like home.
He is always trying to find a balance between work and fun. Sometimes we went to shoot pool, go for a swim in the river and go to free concerts. He also helps us with information and all the facilities to travel to some places. We also went camping and had a really Canadian experience.
In the farm we learned a lot of things with the animals like give medicine to the sheep or had the experience to feed baby lambs and piglets.
In the house we always tried to have a good environment among Wes and the other helpers; we prepared some traditional food from our countries and in the free time we played cards or had nice talks.
Thank Wes for this amazing experience. We hope to see you soon either in Mexico or Canada. 😀
He is a very caring individual who is involved in his community, we assisted in a delivery of meat to a Toronto food bank close to his heart. He has many stories, thoughtful advice, and a meaningful experience to share with travelers. I learned so much during my short stay and he has become a source of great knowledge to me. He has inspired me to actively pursue my passions, proving that anything is possible if you put your mind to it.
Although I helped in the end of winter, we tended to the sheep and pigs daily for feeding and watering. I was able to witness hour old lambs, give medications and booster injections to older lambs (due to the presence of a fellow volunteer who recently graduated veterinary school), and foster an abandoned lamb.
We did indoor painting and organizing to help Wes along with recent renovations. The downstairs floor consists of multiple bedrooms, bathrooms, large kitchen and living room where volunteers can interact and live together. The 3 dogs are so lovable...the llama not so much ! Knowing Wes, new projects are currently being developed.
Average day consists of feeding and saying good morning to the sheep and lambs (about 150), Billy the goat, two llamas, the 30 + pigs and 19 of the 2 week old piglets, heritage turkeys, chickens, ducks, 5 beautiful maremma girls (dogs) and last but not least, my 2 babies- Rupert and MJ (2 lambs who are bottle fed, abandoned by their mums.). I tried to find a way to take them back to Australia with me but had no luck lo. They melt my heart, I love them, so take good care of them !
During the week we help with projects such as fence building, gardening, house duties, cooking and if you're lucky like me you will get to see some baby animals being born, such as the piglets I helped deliver, ask Wes what "help deliver" means ! What an experience !
Wes has a lot of experience in life and is never short of stories. I've learned a lot from him and JJ. On weekends, we went to the Beach in Cobourg, the River down the road, caught a train into Toronto, played board/card games with JJ, she's very competitive and loves winning !
The farm is gorgeous and looks right onto Rice Lake, I was sad to leave, and thank Wes and JJ for the amazing skills taught, experience and friendship. I'll cherish this experience for the rest of my life, can't wait to come back and visit again in the future.
Thank you for your hospitality, experience and good advice !
I Iearn a lot about farm work itself and about the different animals and how to take care of them.
For the most part of my stay, we were volunteers and unfortunately dut to covid we couldn't leave the farm on the weekends- but we made the best out of it with playing games and watching movies and having countless great meals and conversations.
Wes was a great host who cares about the wellbeing of the volunteers and always has a good story to share.
He also always made sure we were not exposed to any kind of risk since the lockdown started.
I encourage everyone to come and spend some time at the farm as it is a wonderful spot (located directly at Rice Lake) and because you will learn a lot about yourself and who you want to be.
Thank you Wes and the other amazing volunteers I met who made this stay so memorable and unforgettable !
Brian, a local Canadian lad is an awesome guy who always had the tine to show us around or explain the strange ways of the Canadians. Lol.
I enjoyed the farm , caring for the lambs, getting llamas kisses and getting to know the four beautiful dogs.
It was a great first experience for us.
Thank you
Wes, we wish you all the best and want to thank you for all your suggestions, the interesting stories you told us and also for helping us to find a job.
If you are looking for a place where you can learn something about animals, farmlife, cooking, Canada, history and so on, you should go to LAGO VISTA FARMS.
Cheers !
The farm is in a beautiful setting, looking right on to Rice Lake so it is great for photos and also has some wonderful animals. When I was there I was feeding animals, driving tractors, building fences, failing at cooking, and website building so the work is definitely varied. There are some wonderful friendly dogs, I already miss Peanut, Sass, Mia, Flufffy and Shyanne and of course the wonderful not so little lamb MJ, who despite his growing size still liked to jump into my lap as I bottlefed him.
With sheep, pigs, llamas, a variety of birds and a goat, there is always something to do at LAGO VISTA FARMS, and with a constant stream of volunteers it's a good place to meet people with a variety of nationalities and backgrounds.
I even got to see Niagara Falls when leaving as Wes took my whilst picking up a pig ! ( Thanks again for that !)
I would definitely recommend stopping through if you're in the area and hope you have fun in Ontario.
Thanks again for a wonderful stay everyone, give my love to MJ !
During my stay, we were busy with making hay, building a chicken coop, fixing fences and chasing goats.
I always got an excellent meal ( Wes is a great cook) and I had a lot of fun talking to Wes and listening to all his plans. I was treated like family. Also the animals were really kind. Mia loves to give hugs and the llama was busy giving kisses.
Thanks for the great time at the LAGO VISTA FARMS.
Take care.
On the weekend we got to explore the local area and had many swims at the nearby river.
Wes and JJ are very welcoming 🙂
If you enjoy the outdoors and want to learn about farming this the place for you !
The work was hard and it was cold ( I stayed a month in November) but there was a lot of food to help me grow muscles and plenty of tea to warm me up !
It was an incredible experience that I'll always remember !
We were feeding the animals twice a day ( I was charge of seven calves and I baby bottle feed them !) and the rest of he time we were building them a nice place to live during the winter.
Wes and JJ are very friendly.
Wes was so helpful to me when I planned to visit Washington, Toronto and Niagara Falls ! He knows how to travel around the country and the US and he 's always happy to help you and listen all your crazy stories when you come back ! He also taught me how to cook chili ! We watched movies and played games. We went to see a hockey game and Bryan's volleyball game !
Bryan stays at the farm the all yea, with John. They're both students from Ontario and they are really nice !
I already miss all of you ! And Paul ( he other Volunteer from Germany), and the little lambs, and Mia's cuddles, and the bacon, and the new tap, and the English lessons, and the banana bread, and the Christmas tree we sent to cut together...is it finally decorated ? I wait for the pictures 🙂
In short I'll recommand this experience, this place, these people to everyone !
And maybe I'll come to say Hi on my way back in the summer 😉
Thanks again !
Wes is a fantastic host who will do his best to make the most of your time here. He will get to know you and find out your skills and goals for your time in Canada and help them come true for you. It's hard work but it's worth it.
The living quarters are great, you have everything you need and feel very at home (wifi connection is great and we could use Netflix and You Tube ...). Chopping down the Christmas tree for the living room was a highlight ! If you like to cook or bake there's plenty of scope for experimentation.
The animals are all lovely, the gorgeous and hilarious dogs, the adorable baby lambs who needed our extra care and the little rascal Binky who I'll miss very much.
Wes is more than you could ask for in a host. He is full of advice and stories and will really take care of you, so take care of him too !
Thanks Wes, will never forget it !
Thank you for the great time.
The farm is still in process and this means it's perfect to learn how to farm. I really learned a lot from Wesley especially in caring animals, building fences and barns.
Besides the farming stuff I learned alot about kind of everything. Wesley told a lot of interesting stories and Canadian facts. We've laughed a lot.
But you have to consider that this is a farm and that means hard work.
I can really recommend the farm. Even the view to Rice Lake is just amazing. And the dogs they have are just adorable. I hope I've got the chance to come back.
Thanks again for everything.
Wes and JJ are great hosts and really make you feel comfortable. Wes has lots of interesting stories and is quite an accomplished cook that being said their hospitality is top class and you are really treated as family. They will go out of their way to help you explore more of Canada.
